This Chester County Armory listing is for an Auto-Ordnance Model 1928AC Thompson .45acp transferable NFA submachine gun.
This beautiful transferable submachine gun was originally built in approximately 1941 by Auto-Ordnance in their Bridgeport, CT facility. The 1928AC was a model that was made available for both Law Enforcement and standard commercial sales by the factory grinding the “US” marking off of a standard 1928A1 military sales model and over-stamping the “1” with the letter “C” for commercial.
This gorgeous model features a less common, yet factory original war-time production 10.5 inch finless barrel with a pinned Cutts Compensator attached to bring an overall length of 12″ to the barrel assembly. These barrels are not encountered as often on 1928A1/AC models, as they were only utilized in some of the wartime production versions as a way to simplify production costs and time. The factory L style rear sight that is installed is also a less common variant on 1928A1/ACs for the same reasons. This historical weapon also showcases the horizontal wood forearm and an original style rear stock before the later addition of the crossbolt support in 1943. The bolt remains in its original factory silver/white configuration.
Purchase of this transferable submachine gun will includes one WWII-era 50rd Auto-Ordnance marked original drum magazine featuring a Bridgeport address and a “U” stamping, indicating the drum was manufactured under contract by United Specialties. It features both the Thompson bullet logo and the “WIND TO 9 OR 11 CLICKS” instructions. Also included are two Bridgeport factory-marked 20rd blued magazines and two USGI contract 30rd blued magazines made by Seymour Products.
Overall, this transferable submachine gun is in excellent mechanical condition. The model runs flawlessly with standard SAAMI spec .45acp 230gr ball ammunition. All mechanisms operate smoothly and appropriately. The metalwork is solid with not dents, dings, cracks, malformations, etc. The bolt assembly, Blish lock, actuator, and buffer rod all note only minor finish wear. The bore remains bright with solid rifling.
Cosmetically, the original exterior parkerized finish has worn and patinaed at spots, but remains corrosion free. Light surface scratches and handling marks are observed throughout the original finish, but nothing that is more than cosmetic in nature. The original white letter inlay of the model and serial number remains mostly intact, but have faded from the rear manufacturer marking. The wood stock, pistol grip, and forearm remain solid and strong with only minor light surface scratches and indentations observed. No cracks or causes for concern are noted in the wood furniture.
This fantastic piece of Thompson history is currently on a Form 3 for quick and easy NFA transfer. The current NFA paperwork lists “AUTO-ORDNANCE” as the manufacturer and “1928AC” as the model.
