Original US Military-used TRW Inc. Model M79 “Thumper” 40x46mm Single Shot Grenade Launcher NFA Destructive Device

This Chester County listing is for an original United States Government Issued Model M79 Thumper 40x46mm grenade launcher manufactured by TRW Inc. (Thompson-Ramo-Wooldridge). This model was originally manufactured under a military contract order and delivered to the US Military. It was placed into military use and service until it was released by the US Military in the fall of 2021. Both the receiver and the barrel note “P” proof markings, noting that these marks were only performed on models sold to the military and were not on commercial sale versions. Based on the TRW serial number (113743), this model was likely a late Vietnam war-time production model built in or around 1970. This M79 Grenade Launcher is considered a “battlefield used” model as it was known to be fielded by the US Military in Afghanistan during the 2001-2021 Global War On Terror. Unfortunately, in what capacity and by what specific branch or unit is unknown. This weapon is in an NFA registered Destructive Device. The current NFA Form 3 lists “TRW” as the manufacturer and “M79” as the model.
This model is in excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically for a military-used weapon. All mechanisms operate smoothly and appropriately. The metalwork is solid with structural concerns observed, and a limited number of handling and use marks. The fire controls are clean and crisp with excellent spring tension. The chamber face is solid. The barrel retains very good rifling with no visible concerns. Cosmetically, this model is also in excellent condition for a military-used model, with only minor surface handling scratches and dings observed in the exterior of the metalwork. The wood stock and forend note only minor surface scratches and markings. Some light surface corrosion is noted on the top of the original ladder sight, however no pitting has occurred.
Individuals: prior to purchase, please make sure your Class 3 FFL/SOT dealer can accept a Destructive Device transfer. Under ATF rules, Type 01, Type 02, and Type 07 dealers may only accept two DD transfer’s per SOT year. An acknowledgement letter from these types of FFL/SOT dealers will be required to process a transfer. Type 09 and Type 10 FFL/SOT dealers are exempt from this requirement.
