This Chester County Armory listing is for a fascinating piece of firearm history. Ladies and gentlemen! For your firearm collection’s pleasure: Springfield Armory M14 7.62mm NATO rifle serial no. X100. The 1st semi-automatic M14 model ever created!

A true firearms collector’s dream, this actual rifle was the very first semi-automatic only M14 ever created, making it the original grandfather of the entire progeny of M1A semi-automatic rifles that exist today. US Springfield Armory M14 X100 was designed and constructed by the engineers at the United States Armory and Arsenal at Springfield, Mass. (informally known as Springfield Armory and not to be confused with the later civilian company Springfield Armory Inc.). Their design changes to the original M14 machine gun were intended to make this M14 capable of living up to the increased accuracy standards of long distance military marksmanship, as required by shooters at the National High Power Matches held yearly at Camp Perry, while still maintaining the service rifle designation that is required by the match’s rules and regulations.

Up until the creation of this rifle, all M14’s were select-fire machine guns only, which were not suited well for use in military marksmanship, especially when compared to the previous service rifle, the M1 Garand.  To make this M14 more accurate than the select-fire National Match M14 rifles, the engineers redesigned this weapon to be semi-automatic only by removing the full-auto controls and making some slight receiver and bolt design modifications. This made the M14 more accurate and reliable in a semi-automatic only format, and, of course, down the road, it’s redesign became much more attractive to normal civilian ownership.

Even though this rifle in its current condition is only designed to fire in semi-automatic, the X100 receiver is an NFA registered transferable machine gun, as the receiver was initially created and categorized as a machine gun. As far as the BATFE is concerned, this weapon is a transferable machine gun, and will require all the necessary NFA transfer paperwork, even though it will operate as a semi-automatic weapon, only.

This amazing piece of firearm lore and history is in excellent overall condition and would be right-at-home in the discerning firearm enthusiast’s collection. Mechanically, it is in fantastic functional condition, with only minor wear points noted on the internals, and no structural or functional concerns in the metalwork or stock, whatsoever. The rifle bore is still bright and shiny, with crisp and clean rifling.

Cosmetically, this weapon is also in excellent condition, especially considering its place in history. While there are some minor handling and storage marks noted in the exterior parkerization and the original wooden stock, any marks noted are only cosmetic in nature, and are indicative of the vast history this rifle entails.

This incredible weapon is currently on a Form 3 for easy transfer.
