This Chester County Armory sale listing is for a unicorn in the NFA Transferable Machine Gun world….an almost all-Russian PP-19 Bizon 2-03 9x18mm Makarov select-fire submachine gun that is NFA registered and fully transferable.
The PP-19 Bizon was originally designed and produced by Russian small arms company Izhmash in 1993 as an LE counter-terrorism weapon, capable of providing fast and accurate close range fire with a large capacity, in a caliber meant for CQB type applications. Known mostly by its most distinctive feature (its helical magazine), this version is what is known as a Bizon 2-03 variant, as it has 2nd generation features and is chambered in the common Russian handgun round of 9x18mm Makarov. The magazines for this model have a 64rd capacity. Due to the closed bolt straight blowback design, the gas system utilized on a standard AK rifle has been removed, and replaced with a weighted bolt system that physically appears similar to an AK piston. The Bizon shares the same receiver dimensions, trigger group, and selector controls as the AK-74 rifle and over a 60% commonality in parts. The selector lever is located on the right side of the receiver and has three settings: a fully up, unmarked safe setting that disables the trigger and physically blocks the charging handle; the middle position (marked “АВ”) enables fully automatic fire, and the lowest position (“ОД”) allows the weapon to fire in a semi-automatic mode. The Bizon also features the same left-side folding stock as the AKS-74.
This spectacular model was meticulously built by famed AK gunsmith Mike Friend of Firing Line in Wyandotte, OK using an extremely-rare in the US, original Russian PP-19 Bizon 9x18mm parts kit (minus the barrel and receiver) and an NFA fully transferable LaFrance Specialties converted AKML receiver. (This all steel AK receiver was originally imported into the U.S. as a Norinco semi-automatic rifle, and then converted to a full-auto machine gun by LaFrance). With the exception of the NFA registered receiver and the barrel, all other parts used in this weapon are original Russian Izhmash manufactured parts, including the rare magazines. Mike Friend’s impressive gunsmithing work on this model has replicated the receiver markings exactly as what would be expected on a true Russian weapon, right down to the model, caliber, and manufacturer markings and symbols. He was even able to use true Russian rivets for completion. (The NFA registered receiver also retains its legally-required original manufacturer and importation markings, as well).
Mechanically, this submachine gun runs flawlessly, just like one would expect an AK machine gun to fire. It has only been fired a limited number of times since its build was completed at Firing Line. The internal mechanisms show very little wear. The bolt face is clean and strong. The bore is bright and shiny with crisp, clean, well-delineated rifling. The bolt assembly itself notes no wear marking whatsoever in the finished bolt.
Cosmetically, this amazing weapon is in like-new condition, with only limited handling marks noted in the exterior matte black finish. The selector lever engagement does note the tell-tale “AK line” from operation, but apart from that, the finish is completely intact on all other areas of the weapon. This weapon will come with three original 64rd 9x18mm Makarov Russian magazines (two original production Bizon 2-03 aluminum magazines and one later generation polymer magazine). These Russian magazines do show significant use and handling marks in their original factory finish, but are solidly intact and operate appropriately.
This NFA transferable machine gun is currently available on an eForm capable Form 3 that lists “LA FRANCE, TIMOTHY DBA LAFRANCE SPECIALTIE” as the manufacturer and “AKML” as the model. A Form 3 update letter has been recently submitted with ATF to note the change in caliber, barrel length, and overall length.
