This Chester County Armory listing is for a factory original Colt Model 1921/1928 US Navy overstamp model .45acp transferable Thompson submachine gun.
This beautiful, investment grade Thompson submachine gun was built entirely by Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. in Hartford, CT. 1928 Over stamp model were originally built and registered by Colt as standard 1921 models, but never left the factory due to slow sales. When the US Navy requested a Thompson with a slower rate of fire (among other features that were also changed to create the 1928 model), Colt used existing inventory of the 1921 receivers they had already produced and updated them to the requested 1928 configuration. These models placed the number “8” over the “1” in “The Model of 1921” and also added the “US Navy” marking above the model placard, thus acquiring the nickname “over stamps” in the NFA world.
This gorgeous example features the heavier bolt system of the 1928 to maintain reliability and controllability of the weapon. It also features a 10.52″ finned barrel with a factory Cutts compensator installed. This Thompson submachine gun currently features the standard 1928 forearm it would have originally come with, but included with the purchase is a second original vertical grip (a.k.a. Tommy Gun) forend. Purchase of this weapon will also come with an original Colt 20rd 1921 magazine, two original 30rd magazines (one SW Co. marked and one Auto-Ordnance marked), two 50rd “L” drum magazines (one original Auto-Ordnance NY marked and one Seymour), an original brass cleaning rod, original US military sling, and a reproduction model of the Thompson FBI case.
The transferable machine gun is in outstanding overall mechanical and cosmetic condition, especially for a model that is approaching 100 years in age. Mechanically, this submachine functions flawlessly. All actions, controls, and mechanisms operate smoothly and appropriately. The rifle bore remains clean with solid rifling. The bolt and internals note hardly any physical wear. The wooden stock, forearm, and pistol grip display no cracks, dents, heavy scratches, etc. Cosmetically, this weapon is also in overall outstanding condition based on its age. The original factory finish is solidly intact with only light handling marks and surface scratches visible. While there is some minor finish patina and spotting observed, this model maintains its original finish well above the typically seen examples of this model from this era.
This fantastic, collectible, investment-grade original Thompson submachine gun is fully transferable, C&R license eligible, and currently on a Form 3. The current Form 3 lists “Colt” as the manufacturer and “1921” as the model.
