This Chester County Armory listing is for authentic WWII-era German MP44 Sturmgewehr 7.92x33mm Kurz (aka, 8mm Kurz) transferable machine gun.
This beautiful piece of history features all German WWII-era original parts, but is a non-matching serial number model. This weapon is not a reweld or a conversion, but is a pre-1968 war trophy that was likely registered as a DEWAT (De-Activated War Trophy) and later reactivated. The DEWAT mechanism appears to have been as a filled barrel and/or chamber block that was placed through the receiver to prevent chambering. At that time, this was an ATF accepted deactivation mechanism, and is more highly prized by collectors today as it was reversible without destroying the receiver. Reactivation simply allowed for removal of the block and replacement of the barrel with another period-correct German MP44 barrel. However a small, 2 mm hole does remain on the left side of the receiver from the removal of the block. This hole does not impede or effect functionality. Apart from this small hole, the original receiver remains completely intact and the bore, chamber, bolt, and bolt carrier all show no signs of any physical interference or manipulation.
Various contractor and subcontractor markings, along with multiple Waffenamt markings are observed on this model. The 1944 dated receiver notes a “cos” marking, denoting original receiver production and initial assembly by Merz-Werke in Frankfurt. The barrel notes “ac” (Carl Walther in Zella-Mehlis) markings. “fxo” (C. G. Haenel in Suhl) is also observed.
Overall, this model is in excellent condition for an 80+ year old machine gun. Mechanically, it has been fully inspected with no noted concerns. All mechanisms operate butter smoothly and appropriately. The bolt, bolt carrier, and operating rod note only minor wear and minimal carbon scarring. The bolt face remains crisp and clean. The barrel remains bright and shiny with solid, crisp rifling. The fire controls and trigger mechanism notes very little wear.
Cosmetically, this weapon also appears in excellent overall condition. The metalwork is beautiful with only very minor surface handling and use marks observed in the exterior finish. The finish appears to be original on all of the metal components. Some parts note an eye-pleasing gray to auburn patina, but not notes of corrosion or oxidation is observed. The wood stock and pistol grip panels display some minor handling marks and small chips on the exterior, but no cracks or structural concerns. Purchase of this model will include one factory original WW2 production CG Haenel marked 40rd magazine.
This fantastic, investment-grade, German factory manufactured MP44 transferable machine gun is currently on a Form 3 for easy transfer. The current NFA Form 3 paperwork denotes the manufacturer as “Germany” and the model as “MP44.”
