This Chester County Armory listing is for an outstanding condition, factory original Colt Model 653 M16A1 5.56mm NATO carbine transferable machine gun.
Originally Colt factory built and NFA registered as a commercial sales 20″ barreled rifle machine gun, this model is a 9,000,000 serial number range factory Colt M16A1 that has been updated into a modern configuration transferable machine gun setup. This is a late 1970’s/early 1980’s factory production Colt machine gun and not a conversion, so all milspec front pin M4/M16/AR15 uppers will drop on. The finish on this lower is a deep black finish, allowing it to be color matched to modern Colt factory uppers with ease. It is currently setup as a Colt 6933 IAR FBI HRT 5.56mm model, but will also come with the proper Colt upper and parts to configure it similar to an XM177e2 (military model) or Model 639 (commercial/export) model as well. In addition to both uppers, purchase also includes a Magpul MOE SL stock for the IAR and an original Colt CAR stock for the XM177e2. Both are interchangeable on the installed two-position milspec buffer tube. Three 30rd Colt factory magazines and a Colt M16A1 Carbine Factory operators manual and pack are also included with the purchase, as well. All parts and accessories with this setup are factory Colt items (with the exception of the Magpul MOE SL stock and Magpul rear BUIS on IAR).
This transferable machine gun setup is in beautiful, collector-grade condition. Mechanically, all components are in excellent condition. The factory registered original Colt machine gun lower notes only very minimal wear on the internal fire controls. This model sports the desirable SAFE, SEMI, and AUTO markings with the proper corresponding factory fire controls. The metalwork is solid, with no dents, dings, scratches, cracks, gouges or malformations observed. Cosmetically, the black finish is outstanding, with only minor points of finish wear. The two-position stock buffer tube notes only minor finish wear.
The Colt IAR 6933 11.5″ barreled upper is in factory new condition and has not been fired outside of assembly and test firing by Colt. It includes a Colt factory H3 heavy buffer and spring for use with the IAR upper.
The Colt XM177e2 style upper is a 14.5″ factory Colt A1 upper that has had an imitation Colt Moderator installed to allow for the weight and appearance to be that of an original Moderator without the hassle of an additional NFA stamp for a silencer (that doesn’t really silence, anyway). This faux Moderator is made of steel and installs to the factory 1/2×28 factory barrel threading by sleeving over the barrel. This allows the 14.5″ barrel to appear the same length as an 11.5″ Commando barrel, with no additional length for the extension. This item has also been serial number engraved to match the M16A1 lower, the same that way that Colt matched the original 639 models for export or commercial sale. This item can be removed and replaced with a standard birdcage or other flash hider or muzzle device, if desired. This setup also includes an original standard carbine buffer and spring for use with this upper. Overall condition is very good to excellent. Mechanically, the upper has no operational points of concern. The original Colt BCG group notes moderate finish wear, but the chamber and bore remain crisp and clean with well-delineated rifling. Cosmetically, the upper receiver notes some minor handling marks on the top edges of the finish at the sharp points of the carry handle some small scratches underneath the handle wear a handle-mounted scope was previously installed.
This entire setup is an excellent investment NFA machine gun for the collector who desires the ability fire his machine guns, and wants a factory M16 but prefers it in a more modern M16 setup. The darker finish of this model allows for easy upper swapping without creating an unappealing two-toned affect, yet the weapon can be returned to a factory setup with ease.
This collectible, investment-grade Colt M16A1 factory machine gun is fully transferable and currently on a Form 3. The current Form 3 lists “Colt” as the manufacturer and “M16” as the model.
